FUSION OF BUSINESS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

In the past years, great strides have been made in the development of the world's greatest network. Technologies such as computers, modern telecommunications, and the Internet blend together to create an access to the business world in a split second. Previous technologies such as railways and electricity took decades to extend to developing countries. However, the introduction of the Information Technology (IT) provides a new hope in this modern dot com business world.

IT i.e. computers and the Internet offers virtually free access to a huge amount of information and expert advice on various subjects from firms concerning the engineering field, to health care and plant cultivation. In addition to that, IT decreases communications costs and breakdown geographical boundaries; therefore, IT is bound to speed up the global circulation of knowledge. Apart from that, a single Internet connection can be shared by many, giving schools and business firms access to a large information system i.e. the world's top libraries where information is retrieved at a lower cost, and a higher speed.

Another significance of IT, from the emerging countries' point of view, is that it reduces the optimal size of a firm in most countries. Firms in up-and-coming economies are typically smaller than in rich countries and the Internet allows such small corporations to sell direct into the global markets at a lower cost. The Internet makes it possible for a tailor in Vietnam to custom-make a suit for a legal assistant in Chicago, then to courier it to him.

Subsequently, by bringing down the cost of communicating with someone on the other side of the world, IT makes it easier for the multinational firms to move production to emerging economies to take advantage of low labour costs. That should help poorer countries to attract more direct foreign investment. IT also allows some previously untradeable services to be traded just like physical goods. Thus, any business activity that can be conducted via a screen and telephone can be carried out anywhere in the world!
